NINTH SENATE SETS UP AD-HOC COMMITTEE ON WELFARE, NOTIFIES PRESIDENCY



The Senate of 9th National Assembly has set the ball rolling on Thursday, June 13, 2019 by notifying the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mahammadu Buhari that having formed quorum in its first sitting has elected Presiding Officers that would preside over the Chamber in the next four years. Sen. Ahmad Lawan (Yobe North) and Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege (Delta Central) were elected as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively.

The Chamber equally congratulated the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives on their election as the Presiding Officers of the Chamber. It also informed the Green Chamber that the Senate has accordingly elected its Presiding Officers.

The Senate also directed the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA) to reach out to Executive Arm of Government through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and inform it that having formed the necessary quorum, it is ready to receive any Executive Communication from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Similarly, the Red Chamber in addition sent a message to the following International Parliamentary Bodies informing them that a quorum of the Senate of the 9th National Assembly of Nigeria has assembled and is ready to receive any communication;

i) African Union (AU)

ii) Common Wealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) 

iii) Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

iv) ECOWAS Parliament

v) Pan African Parliament

vi) Association of Senate, Shoora and Equivalent Council in Africa and the Arab World.

Meanwhile, the Senate through the Clerk of the Chamber has sworn in Sen. Elect Rochas Okorocha to represent Imo West. Thereafter it went into Executive Session that lasted more than an hour. 

On resumption of plenary, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan announced that the Chamber, while in closed door session deliberated on issues concerning the Chamber and the nation.

Sen. Lawan also disclosed that the Senate has set up an Ad-hoc Committee on Welfare which has been mandated to allocate offices and Senate Seat to each Senator. The Committee comprises of Twelve Senators and the Management of the National Assembly. The Committee has two weeks to complete its assignment.

The Members of the Committee include: Sen. Abubakar Kyari – Chairman, while Sen. Aisha Ahmed, Sen. Gabriel Suswan, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Sen. Betty Apiafi, Sen. Bassey Akpan, Sen. Barau Jibrin, Sen. Ibrahim Gobir, Sen. Nicholas Tofowomo, Sen. Solomon Adeola Olamilekan, Sen. Chukwuka Utazi, Sen. Stella Oduah are Members and the Management of the National Assembly.

Consequently, the Senate has adjourned session to the Tuesday, July 2, 2019.
