HOUSE CHARGE ROAD SAFETY COMMITTEE ON DOUBLE PARKING AND CONGESTION ON THE ROADS
Worried about the continued congestion and double parking of vehicles on the nation's major roads, the House of Representatives on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 directed its Committees on Federal Road Safety Commission, Works and Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to work towards finding a lasting solution to the unsafe practice of congestion of roads and double parking. The directive which also mandated the Committees to engage relevant Agencies responsible for the construction and equipping the pilot truck parks with a view to getting them completed expeditiously, came following a motion moved by Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.

Citing an example with double parking of trailers at Maraban Jos in Igabi area of Kaduna State, he stated that several lives have been lost due to accidents caused by parked vehicles along portions of the expressway. He emphasized that the practice engenders some sorts of social menace such as violation of traffic laws, armed robbery attacks, drug peddling to mention a few. He averred that construction and fencing of pilot truck parks with all necessary facilities and security in towns with similar problems will serve as a panacea to the ugly trend. He further prayed the House to extend its consultations to the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) alongside Petroleum Tankers Drivers (PTD).

During the plenary, the House in a Committee of the Whole considered the report of six Bills from various Committees, among which are report of a Bill for an Act to amend the advertising Practitioners (Registration, etc) Act, Cap. A17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to increase the prescribed penalties, to Transfer Appellate Jurisdiction in Matters under the Act, from the Court of Appeal to the High Court. Three Bills were also considered from the Committee on Agricultural Production and Services.
