SIX BILLS SAIL THROUGH SECOND READING IN THE SENATE

SIX BILLS SAIL THROUGH SECOND READING IN THE SENATE
In fulfilment of its legislative mandate, the Senate, on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 passed for Second Reading Six Bills. The general principles of the legislations were debated by  Senators and subsequently given the legislative approval. The Six Bills that scaled through to the next legislative stage include:
1) A Bill for an Act to Establish the National Roads Funds and for purpose of Financing the Maintenance and Rehabilitation of National Roads and for other matters connected therewith, 2016 (S.B. 218), sponsored by Sen. Kabiru Gaya (Kano South). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Works to report back in four weeks.
2) A Bill for an Act to Repeal the Nigerian Football Association Act 2004, CAP N10 LFN and Enact the Nigeria Football Federation and for matters connected therewith, 2016 (S.B. 154), sponsored by Sen. Obinna Ogba (Ebonyi Central). The Bill having scaled through second reading has been referred to the Senate Committee on Sports and Social Development to report back in four weeks.
3) A Bill for an Act to provide for the Utilization, Sustainability and Adequate Supply of Renewable Energy for Electricity and Heat Generation and for related matters, 2016 (S.B. 131), sponsored by Sen. Stella Oduah (Anambra North). The legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Power, to report back in four weeks.
4) A Bill for an Act for the Establishment of Nigeria Industrial Development Zones and for related matters, 2016 (S.B. 280), sponsored by Sen. Fatima Olufunke Raji-Rasaki (Ekiti Central). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Industry, to report back in four weeks.
5) A Bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment and Operation of a Programme to enable certain persons receive protection in relation to certain enquiries, investigations and prosecutions and for matters connected therewith, 2016 (S.B. 157), sponsored by Sen. Isiaka Adeleke (Osun West). The legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, to report back in four weeks.
6) A Bill for an Act to Protect Persons Making Disclosure for Public Interest and others from Reprisal, 2016 (S.B.158), sponsored by Sen. Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti South). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, to report back in four weeks.
The last two Bills in the course of their deliberation were consolidated into one for the purpose of debating their general principles in view of the fact that both Bills sought to address a similar subject matter.
