REPRESENTATIVES MEET WITH SERVICE CHIEFS, MAKE CASE FOR LATE M.K.O ABIOLA.
The House of Representatives has passed a resolution on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 urging the Federal Government to bestow the highest National Honour on the man they described as the of champion of democracy in Nigeria, late Chief M.K.O Abiola. Members of the green chamber acknowledged that on June 12, 1993, Nigerians voted for late Chief MKO Abiola, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic party (SDP) against Chief Bashir Tofa of the National Republic Convention (NRC).

They noted the then military Head of State, Gen, Ibrahim Babangida annulled the presidential elections held on June 12, 1993, adjudged by both local and foreign observers as the most free and fair in the history of Nigeria; in addition, MKO Abiola, before his demise on July 7, 1998 attempted to reclaim his mandate but was detained by another military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha. They stated that given the kind of injustice meted to him, this nation owes it as a duty to declare June 12 as Public Holiday.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara has congratulated the overall winners of the recently concluded 2nd phase of the Secondary Schools Quiz Competition which was organized by the National Institute for Legislative Studies (NILS). In the highly contested Quiz tournament, the School for the Gifted, Gwagwalada emerged as the winner.

Speaker Dogara conveyed his best wishes to the students and encouraged them to continue to excel in both academics and other worthy endeavors.

The House then resolved into a closed session as the chamber hosts the Ministers of Defense, Interior, Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of the Police, the Director General of State Security and the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps to brief the House on measures taken to check the incessant kidnapping of unsuspecting citizens along the Abuja-Kaduna high way.

The invitation of the security chiefs was pursuant to a motion moved on the floor of the chamber in that regard.
