Members of the House of Representatives passed a resolution on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 urging President Muhammadu Buhari to replace the present Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris with a more professional officer. The resolution was in reaction to two motions moved by Hon. Mark Gbillah and Abubakar Danuram describing as derogatory and unprofessional, the latest comment credited to the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Police, Jimoh Ibrahim during a media interview where he called for the resignation of the Executive Governor of Benue State, Governor Ortom referring to him as a “drowning man”. 

Hon. Gbillah averred that the seeming unwillingness of the Inspector General of Police to recognize and enforce a constitutionally enacted law by a legislative arm of government, being the Anti-open Grazing law enacted by the Benue State House of Assembly, gives him away as partisan.

In a related motion moved by Hon. Dannuram titled ‘motion on need to curb thuggery during political activities in Kano state and Nigeria in general, the lawmaker also highlighted occasions where the IGP has failed to effect security. He posited that the Nigerian Police and other security agencies have turned blind eyes to illegal acts of terror being perpetuated across the country.

The motions which enjoyed great came with other prayers including “directing that the IGP should tender apology to the People and Governor of Benue State over the derogatory statement of the Police PRO and go a step further to relieve him of his duties”,“mandate the relevant committee to investigate the alleged statements made by the IGP vis a vis its implication in putting an end to the killings in Benue State and other affected parts of the country.
