SENATE PASSES FOR SECOND READING CITY VARSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, NATIONAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
The Red Chamber on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 deliberated on the general principles of seven Bills and ultimately passed them for second reading. The legislation that progressed to the next legislative stage originated from the Upper Legislative Chamber. Those that scaled through second reading include:
1) A Bill for an Act to establish the City University of Technology, Auchi, Edo State and for connected matters Bill, 2018 (S.B. 447), sponsored by Sen. Francis Alimikhena (Edo North). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND to report back in four weeks.
2) A Bill for an Act to establish the National Youth Development Commission and for matters connected therewith, 2018 (S.B. 385), sponsored by Sen. Obinna Ogba (Ebonyi Central). The legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Sports Development, to report back in four weeks.
3) A Bill for an Act to repeal the Nigerian Press Council Act 1992 as amended and to enact thereof the Nigerian Press Council Bill, 2018 and for related purposes (S.B. 547), sponsored by Sen. Suleiman Adokwe (Nasarawa South). It has been referred to the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation to report back in four weeks.
4) A Bill for an Act to amend the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act CAP C4 LFN 2004 and for related matters, 2018 (S.B. 448), sponsored by Sen. Samuel Anyanwu (Imo East). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, to report back in four weeks.
5) A Bill for an Act to amend the National War College Act CAP N82 LFN 2004 to provide for change of name to National Defence College and other connected purposes, 2018 (S.B. 551), sponsored by Sen. Hope Uzodinma (Imo West). The legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Defence, to report back in four weeks.
6) A Bill for an Act to translate and expand the Educational Policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria on access to educational services by institutionalizing Open Distance Learning in collaboration with National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Board for Technical Education and for related matters, 2018 2018 (S.B. 332), sponsored by Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger North). It has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND to report back in four weeks.
7) A Bill for an Act to establish the Federal Polytechnic Item to provide for full time courses in Technology, Applied Sciences, Management and other fields of studies and to make provision for the general administration of the Polytechnic, 2018 (S.B. 520), sponsored by Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa (Abia North). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, to report back in four weeks.
