Abandonment and Non-utilization of Tractors Worth N600 Billion Purchased by the Federal Government…Representative Calls for Investigation

The House of Representatives has set up an ad hoc Committee to investigate allegations of abandonment of tractors worth N600 Billion procured by the Federal Government for farmers in some some States of the federation. The resolution to investigate the matter came on the heels of a motion moved by Hon. Abbas Tajudeen during plenary session on Thursday, November 29, 2018; he lamented over the non-utilization of 60, 000 tractors which grossly negates the intention of Government to diversify the economy.
He stated that in order to achieve the plan of the Federal Government to diversify the economy through agricultural production by promoting mechanized farming nationwide, the government acquired about 60,000 tractors worth N600 Billion Naira for distribution to farmers in some states, but the distribution is yet to be actualized.

The lawmaker regrets to note that despite the intendment of the Federal Government to acquire 1 million tractors for delivery to farmers in the 774 Local Government Areas of the Federation through the 2,500 Agricultural Equipment Hiring Enterprise to be established in various locations, some States have in their custody about 40,000 tractors partly acquired by the previous and current Administrations, which have been abandoned or lying waste at the premises of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and some private farms located in those States.
He therefore called for a thorough investigation into the matter with a view to ensuring that these tractors are released to farmers to aid agribusiness in the country.
