HOUSE ASSUMES KEY LEGISLATIVE ISSUES AS DEBATE ON LEGISLATIVE AGENDA CONTINUES
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to immediately remove all abandoned vehicles from the roads and mandated the Committees on Commerce and Industry to conduct an investigation on the seemly neglected recycling project which the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment initiated. This was struck through an agreement with its Japanese counterpart aimed at setting up a project that would recycle abandoned vehicles and transform them into scrap metals.
The resolution stemmed from a motion moved by Hon. Nicholas Ossai during the plenary session on Wednesday 29, July 2015. He lamented that Nigeria has recorded one of the highest casualty figures from road accidents as a result of large number of abandoned vehicles on expressways. Adding that these vehicles constitute litters on those roads which also pose great danger to not less than seven (7) million vehicles that ply the roads.
Still on road accidents, the House has also resolved to constitute an Ad hoc Committee to meet with the leadership of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers and the Federal Road Safety Corps to fashion out ways to reduce and perhaps eliminate incessant occurrence of accident that have claimed many lives and properties of passengers.
Meanwhile, the House has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to quickly visit the communities in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Area of Lagos State that have suffered massive environmental degradation due to rupture of sewages which was reported to have emitted liquid and solid waste substances. The Representative of the said Federal Constituency, Hon. Rita Orji appealed to the House to passionately consider about two million Nigerians affected by this lingering environmental menace and take urgent action to save lives before it’s too late.
