SENATE PASSES MOTION ON LATE SEN. FELIX IBRU & THREE BILLS FOR SECOND READING
The Senate on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 deliberated upon and passed a Motion on the demise of Sen. Felix Ovuodoroye Ibru, the former Governor of Delta State and member of the Fifth Senate (2003 – 2007). The Red Chamber also debated and successfully passed for second reading three Bills. The Motion was sponsored by Sen. Ovie A. Omo-Agege (Delta Central) and two others.

Leading the debate on the Motion, Sen. Omo-Agege noted with grief the demise of Sen. Felix Ovuodoroye Ibru, the first democratically elected Governor of Delta State, who he described as a revered leader and the Olorogun of the Urhobo ethnic nationality of Delta State. He added that the late Ibru represented Delta Central Senatorial District in the Fifth Senate and served the country with pride as a quintessential legislator, a bridge builder, a great force for national development, unity and peace.
Sen. Omo-Agege disclosed that the late Ibru was the major architect of the Ibru Business Empire that contributed immensely to put Nigeria on the world of business and the lifted the image of the nation. Accordingly, the Motion sailed through with two resolutions below:
1) Observe a minute silence in honour of late distinguished Sen. Felix Ovuodoroye Ibru.
2) Send a delegation to condole with the family of Sen. Felix O. Ibru, the people and government of Delta State and also participate in the late Senator’s funeral.

Similarly, the Hallowed Chamber debated the general principles of three Bills and successfully passed them for second reading. The legislation that progressed to the next stage include:
a) A Bill for an Act to Establish the Chartered Institute of Capital Market Registrars; to Regulate and Control the Practice of Registration and for related matters, 2016 (S.B. 25), sponsored by Sen. Francis Alimikhena (Edo North). The Bill scaled through second reading having enjoyed an overwhelming support from distinguished Senators. It has been referred to the Committee on Capital Market to report back in four weeks.
b) A Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigerian Airforce Institute of Technology to provide technical training to personnel of the Nigerian Airforce and other services of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other connected purposes, 2016 (S.B. 160), sponsored by Sen. Duro Faseyi (Ekiti North). The legislation having sailed through second reading has been referred to the Committee on Airforce to report back in four weeks.
c) A Bill for an Act to Amend the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund Act CAP N88, LFN, 2004, to provide Social Security/Protection to serve as a cushion to all working class citizens both in private and public sectors, unemployed and aged without discrimination and other related matters, 2016 (S.B. 159), sponsored by Sen. Nazif Suleiman (Bauchi North). The Bill has been referred to the Committee on Labour and Productivity to report back in four weeks.
