SENATE PASSES TETFUND, MARITIME VARSITY AND SIX BILLS FOR SECOND READING
The Upper Legislative Chamber on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 considered and passed for second reading eight legislations. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki presided over the session in which the Bills’ general principles were deliberated upon by distinguished Senators and ultimately gave the much needed legislative approval. Among the Bills that scaled through second reading include:
1) A Bill for an Act to Amend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund - TETFUND (Establishment etc.) Act 2011 and for other matters connected therewith, 2016 (S.B. 375), sponsored by Sen. Barau Jibrin (Kano North). The legislation having scaled through second reading has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND to report back in four weeks.
2) A Bill for an Act to provide for the Management, Administration, Operation, Regulation, and Supervision of Payment, Clearing and Settlement Systems in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and provide for other related matters, 2016 (S.B. 05), sponsored by Sen. Hope Uzodinma (Imo West). The Bill sailed through second reading and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions to report back in four weeks.
3) A Bill for an Act to Establish the Maritime University of Nigeria, Okorenkoko, Delta State and for connected matters thereto, 2016, (S.B. 295) sponsored by Sen. James Manager (Delta South). The Bill also passed second reading and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND to report back in four weeks.
4) A Bill for an Act to Establish the Maritime University of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom State and for connected matters thereto, 2016 (S.B. 309), sponsored by Sen. Nelson Effiong (Akwa Ibom South). The Bill was equally referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND to report back in four weeks.
5) A Bill for an Act to Establish the National Sports Commission to be charged with the responsibility of Administration of Sports and other matters incidental thereto, 2016 (S.B. 155), sponsored by Sen. Obinna Ogba (Ebonyi Central). The legislation having progressed to the next stage has been referred to the Senate Committee on Sports to report back in four weeks.
6) A Bill for an Act to provide for Legal Framework for Credit Bureau Services and for other matters connected therewith 2016 (S.B. 205), sponsored by Sen. Rafiu Ibrahim (Kwara South). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions to report back in two weeks.
7) A Bill for an Act to Amend the Company Income Tax Act CAP C21 LFN 2004, to provide for matters connected therewith 2016 (S.B. 140), sponsored by Sen. Andy Uba (Anambra South). The legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Finance to report back in two weeks.
8) A Bill for an Act to provide for the Facilitation and Coordination of Public Infrastructure Development to ensure that infrastructure development in the country is given priority in  Planning, Approval and Implementation and for matters incidental thereto 2016 (S.B. 04), sponsored by Sen. Barnabas Gemade (Benue North-East). The Bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Works to report back in four weeks.
