SENATE PASSES EXTRA JUDICIAL EXECUTION AND ANTI-KIDNAPPING BILLS INTO LAW
In order to guard against the increasing menace of jungle justice and kidnapping in Nigeria, the Senate on Thursday, September 28, 2017 considered and passed into law two legislation. The Report of the two Bills that got the ultimate approval of the Red Chamber were presented before the Chamber for consideration by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters by Sen. Chukwuka Utazi.
Accordingly, the Chamber resolved into the Committee of the Whole for clause by clause consideration of the following legislation:
a) Abduction, Wrongful Restraints and Wrongful Confinement for Ransom Bill, 2017 (S.B. 118), sponsored by Sen. David Umaru (Niger East). All the clauses of the Bill, short and long titles, schedules and memorandum of understanding were approved as recommended or amended. Thereafter, it was read the third time and passed.
b) Prohibition and Protection of Persons from Lynching, Mob Action and Extra Judicial Executions Bill, 2017 (S.B. 109), sponsored by
Sen. David Umaru (Niger East). All the clauses of the Bill, short and long titles, schedules and memorandum of understanding were approved as recommended or amended, afterwards, it was read the third time and passed.
Similarly, the Senate has deliberated upon and passed a motion on the 57th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria. Rising under point of order 42 and 52, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu sought and obtained the leave of the Chamber to present and accordingly consider the Motion under matters of urgent national importance on the 57th Independence Anniversary of the country coming up on Sunday, October 1, 2017.
The law-makers were unanimous in their submission and desire to one independent Nigeria where peace, harmony, love and understanding in diversity as well as overall development of all parts of the country is the hallmark of the present administration. The Motion scaled through with a single resolution below:
i) Congratulate Nigeria and Nigerians on the celebration of 57th Independence Anniversary of the country. The Senators wished the citizens happy celebration.
