HOUSE SETS UP AD-HOC COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE THE CRISIS IN THE NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME (NHIS).

The House of Representatives during plenary on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 weighed in on the recent crisis rocking the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) that has shut down operations of the Scheme as the workers protest against alleged high-handedness of the Executive Secretary, Prof. Usman Yusuf.

Following a motion of urgent public interest raised by Hon. Diri Douye on the need to prevent the health scheme from degenerating into a theater of war, the House passed a resolution to constitute an Ad hoc Committee to investigate the matter and report back to the Chamber within four weeks for further action.
Hon. Douye narrated that on Monday, October 22, the NHIS workers blocked the entrance of the office, preventing the suspended Executive Secretary, Prof. Yusuf, from entering the office. His supporters however broke the lock of the gate, thereby forcing their way into the office.

He informed the House that Prof. Yusuf was suspended by the Governing Council of the NHIS over allegations of fraud, being the second time he would face disciplinary action on an account of abuse of office and sundry matters. He cautioned that if urgent steps are not taken to bring the situation under control, it may escalate to violent clash.
