REPS PLEDGES TO WORK WITH EXECUTIVE TO TACKLE NATIONAL SECURITY

 

In response to the daunting challenges faced by Nigeria in recent times, the Speaker of House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen has on Thursday, February 22, 2024 asserted that even though the current democracy is designed on the Principles of Separation of Powers, the House of Representatives will continue to work closely with the Executive Arm of Government to address the multifaceted challenges facing the nation.

Rt. Hon. Tajudeen made the statement during a Valedictory Session in honour of former Speaker, late Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba. He stressed that the collective goal of all Nigerians especially those in government must be to chart a course of development for the nation.

The Speaker added that the Principle of Separation of Powers thrive on synergy between Arms of Government, he noted that it is not a design for division but a formula for collaboration. The Presiding Officer of the Green Chamber pledged to expedite the passage of critical legislations that will empower the Executive and support the President in tackling the nation’s economic challenges.

Hon. Tajudeen opined that through constructive partnership grounded in dialogue and cooperation, the legislature can address the present difficulties and lay out the blueprint for a new Nigeria that is economic powerhouse of the region and the world.

Apparently, the Speaker stated that the journey since the return to democracy in 1999 has not been without challenges, he disclosed that Nigeria has faced, will continue to face and confront a myriad of issues and challenges. Yet the resilience of our democracy, strengthened by the contribution of Rt. Hon. Na’Abba and others has allowed us to navigate these tumultuous waters with hope and determination.

 

The Presiding officer of the Green Chamber reveal that at the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1999, Nigeria stood as the threshold of history, after long years of Military rule, Nigerians longed for stability, democracy and good governance that resonated with their hopes and aspirations.

Hon. Tajudeen posited that it was in this context that late Hon. Na’Abba assumed the position of Speaker, guiding the House with wisdom, dedication and unwavering commitment.

Speaker, Tajudeen said late Na’Abba’s tenure laid the foundation of a robust, independent legislature, vital for checks and balances that underpinned a vibrant democratic system. He added that his leadership was characterized by a profound understanding that the strength of a democracy is measured by not just the freedom enjoyed by the citizens but by also the strength of its institutions.
