HOUSE MAKES CASE FOR INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS IN THE NORTH EAST

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to assist the governments of the North-Eastern States of the country to urgently construct temporary camps and homes for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to allow for evacuation from schools which have remained closed for over three years.
The resolution which came on the heels of a motion moved by Hon. Asabe Vilita Bashir during plenary on Tuesday 30, July 2015 also seeks for prudent use of victims’ Intervention Fund generated by the past administration.
Hon. Bashir pointed out that the government of the affected States had to re-settle the internally displaced persons in schools, hajj and NYSC camps due to insurgency in the zone which consequently led to the closure of schools that has left the students idling away and vulnerable to social vices. She charged the federal government to rebuild and refurbish schools to enable them reopen once security agencies assure it’s safe to do so.
One of the prayers of the motion was amended to include “that the federal government should create an agency akin to NDDC to oversee the affairs of the IDPs”.
In a similar development, the House weighed in on cases of extra-judicial killings and other forms of high profile murders in the country; in this regard, the House urged the Nigerian Police to be more vigilant in the prevention and investigation of crimes. Reacting to a motion of notice brought to the floor of the House by Hon. Kingsley Chinda, a resolution was accordingly passed mandating the Committees on Police Affairs, Public Safety and National Security (to be constituted) to monitor the investigation of such cases and present an interim report to the House.
