Senate confirms Nomination of NCC, AMCON Management
The plenary session of the Senate on Thursday, November, 2015 witnessed the consideration and confirmation of Engr. Prof. Umaru Garba Danbatta for appointment as Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and also the confirmation for appointment of the following Management Directors of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON):
1)Ahmed Lawan Karu-Managing Director
2)Kola Adeyeye-Executive Director
3)Eberechukwu Fortunate Uneze-Executive Director
4) Aminu Isma’il-Executive Director
The confirmation of NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Engr. Prof Umaru was sequel to the consideration of the Senate Committee on Communication’s report on the screening exercise of the nominee presented before the Chamber by Sen. Abdul-Aziz Murtala Nyako (Adamawa Central).
The Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole where it considered and approved the recommendations of the Committee and subsequently put the nominee’s confirmation’s question before the Hallowed Chamber and ultimately passed.
While the confirmation of the four Management Directors of AMCON followed the consideration of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions’ report on the screening of the nominees presented before the Red Chamber by Sen. Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim (Kwara South). Accordingly, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole, considered and approved the recommendations of the Committee on the screening exercise. Thereafter, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki put their confirmation questions before the Chamber, one after another. The four nominees were successfully confirmed for appointment.
However, the Upper Legislative Chamber has called on the executive arm government to desist from sending the names of nominees to it for confirmation after they must have assumed office even before their confirmation. The Chamber urged the executive arm to respect the principles of separation of power especially in its bid to implement the change mantra of the present administration by doing things in accordance with the constitution of Nigeria. It urged its leadership to convey the message to the Presidency.
Similarly, the Senate has debated and passed a motion on the demise of Prince Abubakar Audu. The Motion sponsored by Sen. Abdulrahman Abubakar (Kogi East) noted with great sense of loss, the demise of former Governor of Kogi State, leader of APC and the party’s candidate of the just concluded gubernatorial election in Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu at the age of 68. The Motion sailed through with three prayers stated below:
1) Observe a minute silence in honour of Prince Abubakar Audu, the former Governor of Kogi State
2) Send a high powered Senate delegation to condole with the family, people and Government of Kogi State.
3) Urge the Federal Government of Nigeria and Kogi State Government to immortalize this great achiever, Prince Abubakar Audu by naming a national or state monument after him as a mark of honour.
