SENATE CONGRATULATES SUPER FALCONS & PASSES FEDERAL AGENCIES’ 2016 BUDGETS
The Upper Legislative Chamber on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 congratulated the Super Falcons of Nigeria for winning the 2016 African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) Tournament. The Super Falcons defeated the host country’s Cameroonian Female National Team by one goal to nil. The commendation came following a point of order 42 and 52 moved by Sen. Obinna Ogba which sought and secured the leave of the Chamber to debate the Motion. The Motion scaled through with three resolutions below:
i) Congratulate the Super Falcons on their victory in the 2016 AWCON Tournament.
ii) Urge the Federal Government to pay their outstanding allowances.
iii) Urge the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to encourage women to contribute positively to sports in Nigeria.
Similarly, the Senate has considered and passed the Reports of 2016 Annual Budgets of several Federal Government Agencies. Among the Agencies whose budgets were approved include:
1) Conference Committee Report on the Virement of Funds appropriated for Special Intervention (Recurrent) and (Capital) for the funding of critical items in the 2016 budget.
2) The 2016 Annual Budget of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC).
3) The 2016 Annual Budget of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
4) The 2016 Annual Budget of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
5) The 2016 Annual Budget of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).
6) The 2016 Annual Budget of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
7) The 2016 Annual Budget of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency.
8) The 2016 Annual Budget of the National Business and Technical Education Board (NBTEB).
9) The 2016 Annual Budget of National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure.
10) The 2016 Annual Budget of Raw Material Research and Development Council.
11) The 2016 Annual Budget of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
12) The 2016 Annual Budget of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
13) The 2016 Annual Budget of National Insurance Commission.
14) The 2016 Annual Budget of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
15) The 2016 Annual Budget the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
16) The 2016 Annual Budget of Federal Housing Authority (FHA).
17) The 2016 Annual Budget of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).
Meanwhile, Sen. Dino Melaye drew the attention of the Senate to the non-representation of Kogi State in Federal Executive Council. He came under point of order 43 and stated that since the demise of Barrister James Ochli, no replacement has been made to that effect which violates Section 147 sub-section 3 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
