SENATE PASSES FCT VARSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, CONFIRMS NATIONAL POPULATION COMMISSIONER

The Senate in its bid to develop the nation particularly through science and technology has on Thursday, October 18, 2018 thrown its weight behind the establishment of Federal Capital Territory University of Science and Technology, as the Bill seeking to establish the Institution scaled through third reading and passed on the floor of the Chamber.

The passage of the legislation was sequel to the presentation of the Bill’s report before the Senate for consideration by the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND led by Sen. Jibrin Barau (Kano North). The Chamber on receipt of the report, resolved into the Committee of the Whole where all the clauses, schedule, short and long titles as well as memorandum of understanding of the Bill were approved as recommended or amended; thereafter, it was read the third time.
Also, the Red Chamber has received, considered and approved the nomination of Dr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Durunguwa for appointment as Commissioner for National Population Commission (NPC). It would be recalled that the Senate turned down the confirmation of the nominee when the report on his first screening was earlier presented before the Chamber few months ago.

The report on the screening of the nominee was referred back to the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and National Population Commission for further legislative action.
Accordingly, the second report of the Committee on the exercise was presented before the Chamber for consideration. The Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole where it approved the nomination of Dr. Durunguwa. Afterwards, the law-makers confirmed his nomination.

Meanwhile, the Red Chamber has referred the nomination of eight nominees for appointment as Chairman and Members of the Governing Board of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to the Senate Committee on FERMA. The Committee has been given the legislative nod to screen the eight nominees and report back to the Chamber as soon as possible.
